What is a chypre fragrance?
The term “chypre” (pronounced shee-pruh) originates from the French word for Cyprus, inspired by the island’s mossy, resinous aromas. First popularised by François Coty in 1917, the chypre fragrance family captures the spirit of Mediterranean forests. Earthy, green, and sun-drenched.
At its heart, chypre is a structural masterpiece: a bright citrus top (often bergamot) fades into a floral heart (such as rose or jasmine), resting on a deep base of oakmoss, patchouli, and labdanum. The result is harmony, contrast and unity in one breath.
